Chupacabra
Chupacabras, Goat sucker, El Chupacabra
The chupacabra, Spanish for "goat-sucker," is a modern legend. It took off in Puerto Rico in 1995, when farmers blamed a mysterious creature for attacks on their animals, and the stories soon spread to Mexico and the American Southwest. Early witnesses described a spiny, upright beast, while in Texas most of the "chupacabras" people found turned out to be coyotes or dogs with severe mange. As a dream image, it often comes when something keeps going wrong and you can't see why, so a mysterious culprit is tempting to blame. It can also show how fear borrows its shapes from whatever stories are going around.
