Troll
Trolls, Troll under the bridge, Internet troll
Trolls stomp out of Scandinavian folk tales: big, lumpy, not very bright and fond of dark places under hills and bridges. Children in English-speaking homes know the one from 'Three Billy Goats Gruff,' who wants a toll before anyone can cross. In a dream, a troll often embodies an obstacle that blocks your way through sheer stubbornness rather than real strength. Today the word also means someone who stirs up trouble online, so the dream may grow out of a nasty comment or a person who seems to enjoy provoking you. In the old stories trolls can't bear sunlight and turn to stone at sunrise.
Dream variations
- A troll guarding a bridgeSomeone or something wants a price before you can move on, such as approval or a favor. Ask whether you really have to pay it, or whether there's another crossing.
- Being trolled onlineSomeone seems to enjoy getting a rise out of you. Don't feed it; the less reaction they get, the sooner they lose interest.
- A troll turning to stoneA problem that loomed large is about to lose its power. Look at it in plain morning light, not in the small hours.
- Making friends with a trollSomething stubborn that won't budge, like a grumpy neighbor or a clunky old system, is becoming easier to live with. A bit of humor works better than a fight.
