Changeling
Changelings, Fairy child, Swapped baby
In the old folklore of Ireland, Scotland and England, the fairies sometimes stole a human baby from its cradle and left one of their own behind: a changeling, odd, restless and never quite at home among people. A dream about one is far less frightening than the legend sounds. Often it touches on feeling different from the family you grew up in, with tastes or gifts nobody else at the table shares. For new parents, it can reflect the strangeness of the first weeks, when a tiny person seems to change from one day to the next and you're still learning who they are.
Dream variations
- Being the changeling yourselfYou've often felt like the odd one out among your relatives. Ask one of them about their own younger years; the family may hold more odd ones than you think.
- A baby in the cradle that doesn't seem like yoursSomething new in your care still feels unfamiliar, like a role, a project or a little one. Every bond starts out a bit strange; ordinary days together turn it into your own.
- Bringing the real child home from the fairiesYou're reclaiming an open, unguarded side of yourself that you put away when life taught you to be careful. Give it a few small chances to come out again.
- A changeling who talks like an old manIn the tales, a changeling gave itself away by speaking with the wisdom of great age. Someone you've treated as the junior one may know far more than they show, so ask for their view.
