Brownie (house spirit)
House brownie, Household spirit, Hob
Across the Scottish Lowlands and the north of England, many old farms were said to have a brownie: a small, shaggy, brown-faced spirit who belonged to the household and did its chores at night. He threshed, swept and tidied while everyone slept, asking only for a bowl of cream or porridge left by the hearth. Mock him or offer him clothes, and he'd leave for good. A brownie in your dream often turns your thoughts to the unspoken arrangements that keep a home running, and to whether the give-and-take between the people under one roof still feels fair.
Dream variations
- A brownie tidying while you sleepIn the old tales, a brownie only worked when nobody was watching. Someone at home or at work may do their best without an audience, so give them room and stop checking up on them.
- Giving the brownie new clothesIn the old stories, payment drove a brownie away. A favor someone does out of love may change if you try to settle it like a bill, so thank them in kind, with your time or your help.
- An angry brownie rattling the dishesSomeone at home is letting their mood show through clatter and sighs instead of words. Make it easy for them to talk, maybe over a cup of tea while you do the dishes together.
- A brownie moving in with youYou're settling into a home, a job or a group, and it's quietly accepting you. Keep to the little habits of the place, and it will keep you.
