Abyss
Bottomless pit, Chasm, Endless drop
An abyss is depth with no visible floor, the place where the ground simply stops and darkness takes over. Standing near one in a dream often goes with a sense that a choice or a feeling is bigger than you can measure, so you can't tell how far you might drop. The drop may also lead to the deep parts of yourself, the grief, longing or ambition you seldom face head-on. The old warning about gazing into the abyss says something about how fascinating such depths can be. Crossing one, by bridge, by rope or in flight, is a hopeful picture: you're finding a way over what once seemed impossible to pass.
Dream variations
- Crossing a bridge over an abyssYou're getting past a fear one careful step at a time. Fix your gaze on the far side, not on the drop.
- Calling into an abyssYou're reaching out into uncertainty, hoping for an answer. Give it time; some replies come slowly.
- A light at the bottom of the abyssSomething valuable waits in a place you've been afraid to look. Approach it slowly, with good company.
