Matches

Match, Matchstick, Box of matches

One quick strike and a match flares into flame, which makes it a lively symbol of beginnings: the spark that starts a project, a romance or an argument. Striking one in the dark suggests you're about to see something more clearly, if only for a moment. A full box of dry matches says you have what you need to get something going. Because a match burns down in seconds, the dream may also ask you to use a short window of time well.

Dream variations

• Wet matchesYou keep trying to get a plan off the ground, and it fizzles. Check the conditions; the problem may not be your effort.
• A match burning down to your fingersYou held on to a moment a little too long. Let go sooner, and strike a new one when you need it.
• Lighting a candle with a matchA quick idea is turning into something steady. Keep feeding it, and it will outlast the spark.
• Playing with matchesYou're toying with a risky idea or a sensitive subject. Treat it with respect and keep it small.
