Double-decker bus
Double-decker, Red London bus, Routemaster
The red double-decker is one of London's best-known sights, and the classic Routemaster, in service from 1956, had an open platform at the back where passengers hopped on and off. Riding upstairs gives you a view over hedges, shop signs and traffic that you never get at street level. In a dream, a double-decker is often about perspective: the same journey looks very different depending on which level you take it on. It can also be about the levels within a group, who sits where, and whether you feel you're up with the view or down in the bustle.
Dream variations
- Sitting at the front of the top deckUp front on the top deck, it feels as if you're steering, though the driver sits below. You may feel in charge of a journey someone else is driving; enjoy the view, but remember who holds the wheel.
- Jumping onto the open platform as it pulls awayYou're catching a chance on the move, without waiting for the official stop. Hold on tight, and make sure it's heading your way.
- Climbing the stairs while the bus lurchesYou're trying to change places while everything is still moving. Wait for a steadier moment, like a red light or a pause, then make your move.
- Your friends upstairs while you're stuck downstairsYou feel you're on a different level from people you started out with, in status, outlook or plans. A quick visit to their deck, or an invitation to yours, can close the gap.
