Afternoon tea
High tea, Cream tea, Scones and clotted cream
A pot of tea around four o'clock, finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and small cakes on a tiered stand: afternoon tea is a very British treat. Anna, Duchess of Bedford, is credited with making it fashionable in the 1840s, when she grew hungry in the long gap between lunch and a late dinner. In a dream, afternoon tea is about pleasure taken slowly and with a little ceremony. It may also show up when there's a long stretch in your day, or your life, between rewards, and you need something to keep you going until the next one.
Dream variations
- Jam or cream first on your sconeIn Devon the clotted cream goes on first; in Cornwall it's the jam. You're caught up in a friendly disagreement where both sides have a point, so enjoy the banter instead of trying to win it.
- Afternoon tea at a grand hotelYou'd like a day that comes in courses, with nothing rushed and time between each one. Leave a gap in your calendar on purpose, and let one afternoon take as long as it likes.
- A full tea stand just for youYou're learning to give yourself the care you normally save for guests. A celebration for one is still a celebration.
- Sandwiches too tiny to fill you upYou're getting polite, dainty portions of something you need more of, like time, attention or a real conversation. Ask for a proper helping.
