Pine cone

Pine cones, Pinecone, Fir cone

A pine cone is a seed case built like a small suit of armor, with woody scales that open to release seeds when the time is right. Some kinds only release their seeds after the heat of a forest fire, which makes the pine cone a striking image of renewal after hard times. A bowl of cones on a table, perhaps painted gold for the holidays, carries the outdoors inside with a homemade warmth. A cone spread wide on a dry day shows something ready to scatter and grow.
