Lilac

Lilacs, Lilac bush, Lilac blossom

Lilac blooms for only a couple of weeks in late spring, and its sweet scent drifting over a fence is one of the season's great pleasures. The bushes can live for a century or more, and in New England an old lilac sometimes still flowers beside the stone foundation of a farmhouse that's long gone. So the shrub can stand for memory, family roots and affection that outlasts change. In the old Victorian language of flowers, lilac was linked with first love, which gives a romantic dream a tender, youthful note.
