Cicada

Cicadas, Periodical cicada, Cicada song

The loud, buzzing chorus of cicadas is the sound of a hot summer afternoon. Some North American cicadas spend thirteen or seventeen years underground, then climb out together by the millions and fill the trees with noise for a few weeks. A cicada dream often carries that story of long waiting and sudden arrival: something hidden for years is finally coming out into the light. Their nonstop din can also mirror chatter that's hard to tune out.
