Ashes

Ash, Cinders, Rising from the ashes

Ashes are what remains after the fire has done its work. In dreams they often mark the end of something: a plan, a phase or a relationship that has burned out. That isn't the whole story, though. Gardeners have long spread wood ash to feed the soil, so what's left of an ending can help something new to grow. Ashes still warm to the touch may hint that a feeling hasn't quite gone out.

• Rising from the ashesYou're rebuilding after something burned down. What comes next can be stronger for what you learned.
• Sifting through ashesYou're looking back at something that's over, searching for what survived. Keep the lesson and leave the rest where it lies.
• Ash falling like snowSomething big has happened, and the world feels hushed and strange. Give yourself time to take it in.
• Scattering ashesYou're saying goodbye in your own way, to a person, a place or a chapter of life. Take whatever time it needs.
